Un'azione combinata dei due imperi porterà a quella che sarà la più importante battaglia di una intera generazione, combattuta in una calda giornata di agosto nei pressi di una città della tracia: Adrianopoli.

Ci siamo lasciati nello scorso episodio con la tragica storia di una migrazione fallita: una combinazione di fattori strutturali come la forza dei Goti e la scarsa consistenza delle truppe disponibili in Tracia oltre a fattori umani come il comportamento criminale ed incompetente del conte Lupicino hanno portato alla rivolta dei Goti di Fritigern, Alatheus e Saphrax. I Tervingi sono riusciti a sconfiggere l'esercito di Tracia, saccheggiando i ricchi territori a sud dei monti Balcani per poi esserne ricacciati dall'intervento combinato di reparti provenienti dall'oriente e dall'occidente. I Goti si sono poi rifugiati nella Scizia romana, un angolo sperduto dell'impero, e qui hanno combattuto la non decisiva battaglia “ad salices”.

In seguito alla battaglia “ai salici”, combattuta nel 377, i Romani hanno deciso di inchiodare i Goti a nord dei Balcani, fortificandone i passi. Ma la rinnovata alleanza tra Tervingi e Greutungi ha permesso ai Goti di forzare le montagne e dilagare nuovamente in Tracia.

In questo episodio vedremo cosa faranno entrambi gli imperatori per risolvere, una volta per tutte, il problema dei Goti. Durante l'inverno del 377, mentre i Goti si rifocillavano con i proventi dei saccheggi della Tracia, una delle regioni più ricche dell'impero grazie alla sua vicinanza con la capitale Costantinopoli, gli imperi d'oriente e d'occidente studiavano febbrilmente come risolvere il problema Gotico: giunsero alla fine alla conclusione che durante la stagione di guerra del 378 i due imperi avrebbero condotto una operazione congiunta. Era oramai chiaro che Valente non avrebbe potuto iniziare la sua agognata spedizione contro l'oramai anziano Shapur, con il quale per fortuna si riuscì a contrattare una pace. Shapur era probabilmente stanco di guerreggiare contro i Romani e tutto sommato lo status quo era a suo vantaggio: spoiler alert, tra un anno Shapur II, oramai più che settantenne, morirà dopo un regno durato 70 anni. I Romani tireranno un grande sospiro di sollievo.

In occidente il giovane Graziano decise che era arrivato il tempo di finirla con le mezze misure: sarebbe intervenuto di prima persona in Tracia a capo delle sue migliori truppe comitantensi e palatine. La spedizione fu preparata nei minimi dettagli e truppe iniziarono ad affluire in Illirico, meno però di quanto l'impulsivo giovane Augusto avrebbe desiderato: Merobaude, il suo più importante generale, era conscio che non si poteva indebolire troppo la frontiera Renana. Gli avvenimenti provarono che aveva ragione da vendere: infatti Radiofrontiera informò i Germani d'oltreconfine che i Romani stavano spostando il grosso delle truppe verso l'oriente per combattere i Goti. Come al solito i primi a sfruttare l'occasione furono gli indefaticabili Alemanni. In particolare alcuni gruppi di razziatori di una delle loro tribù, i Lentiensi, attraversarono la frontiera a febbraio mentre il Reno era gelato: furono si respinti, ma questo ebbe un effetto paradossale. Gli alemanni sapevano che ad ogni razzia da parte anche di una minoranza di facinorosi corrispondeva poi una rappresaglia imperiale fatta di saccheggi, uccisioni, devastazioni e schiavizzazioni. La paura della rappresaglia spinse gli Alemanni Lentiensi ad unirsi in guerra per proteggersi dalle armi romane.

Graziano ricevette la notizia mentre era già in Pannonia – la moderna Ungheria – e si preparava a passare nel territorio dei Balcani orientali devastato dalla guerra Gotica. Merobaude e Graziano non potevano ignorare invasioni e razzie sulla frontiera Renana: la legittimità a governare degli imperatori occidentali dipendeva a stretto filo dalla loro capacità di tenere fuori i Germani da questa frontiera cruciale: i grandi contribuenti gallici erano infatti uno dei pilastri dell'impero. Graziano fu quindi costretto a fare dietrofront: i Romani avrebbero dovuto impartire una lezione ai Germani occidentali prima di portare il comitatus nei Balcani per le operazioni contro i Germani orientali. Graziano inviò però un messaggio allo zio Valente: avrebbe ritardato un po' a causa dei problemi con gli Alemanni, ma si sarebbe trattato di un ritardo di qualche mese. Graziano consigliava allo zio di attendere sue notizie prima di muovere contro i Goti.

Il guerrigliero dei Romani

Valente nel frattempo era arrivato a Costantinopoli, la città che gli si era rivoltata contro all'inizio del suo regno – ricordate Procopio? Costantinopoli e Valente non si erano mai amati, con l'imperatore che ricambiava il sentimento dei suoi cittadini restando il più possibile lontano dalla città. L'impopolarità di Valente è spesso attribuita al suo arianesimo ma ho buone ragioni per credere che il grosso della popolazione della città fosse ariana a questo punto della storia: Costantinopoli era vissuta sotto imperatori ariani praticamente per quasi tutta la sua breve storia di capitale imperiale e i successori di Valente ebbero non poche difficoltà a far affermare il credo Niceno. Più probabile che i contribuenti della città fossero abbastanza irritati di aver visto le loro ville e proprietà in Tracia devastate dai Goti. Iniziarono ad attribuire la responsabilità del disastro a Valente, che aveva accolto i Goti nell'impero. I contribuenti della capitale si chiedevano che diavolo avesse fatto Valente negli ultimi due anni mentre le loro case bruciavano. Era una critica ingenerosa, ma comprensibile.

Valente, in seguito a moti popolari, decise di stabilirsi fuori città in una delle ville imperiali e da lì comandò le operazioni: occorreva radunare l'esercito che come d'abitudine era sparpagliato nei suoi alloggiamenti invernali. I reggimenti del comitatus orientale iniziarono ad affluire verso i Balcani o almeno lo fecero tutte le truppe che si era potuto muovere senza invogliare i persiani ad invadere. Valente non volle però lasciare alla mercé dei barbari l'intera Tracia mentre l'esercito si concentrava: Diede ordine di intervenire a uno dei suoi migliori generali, quel Sebastiano che Merobaude aveva temuto fosse fatto Augusto dalle sue truppe alla morte di Valentiniano. Sebastiano, alle notizie del caos nei Balcani, aveva infatti fatto domanda di essere trasferito in oriente. Sebastiano prese un paio di reggimenti di truppe scelte – 2 mila uomini appena – e si impegnò a rendere la vita impossibile alle bande di razziatori gotici: iniziò una strategia di guerriglia per colpire bande di razziatori gotici isolate. Una di queste, carica di immenso bottino, si affrettò a cercare di ricongiungersi con il grosso dei connazionali presso Beroea ma fu annientata da Sebastiano: il morale delle truppe orientali, iniziò a risollevarsi. Eppure forse sarebbe stato meglio se i Romani fossero rimasti depressi e un po' umiliati dalle precedenti sconfitte: i limitati successi di Sebastiano convinsero alcuni generali che i Goti non fossero poi questi irresistibili guerrieri. Finora i Goti avevano avuto vita facile, con eserciti romani limitati e guidati da incapaci. Era arrivato il tempo di fargli vedere di cosa il comitatus imperiale era capace.

La gloria del giovane Augusto…

Nel frattempo in occidente i generali di Graziano affrontarono in battaglia gli Alemanni Lentiesi comandati dal re Priar: la battaglia fu combattuta nei pressi di Colmar, in Alsazia. Fu un affare sanguinoso e incerto fino al momento in cui gli Alemanni credettero di vedere nello spostamento di alcune unità romane l'arrivo del Comitatus di Graziano, ancora in viaggio dalla Pannonia. Volti in fuga furono massacrati e con loro morì il re Priar. Graziano arrivò dopo qualche tempo sul posto e, per battere il ferro mentre era caldo, attraversò il Reno e iniziò a devastare le terre degli Alemanni che si rifugiarono sui colli e sui monti più alti e qui furono messi sotto assedio da Graziano: dopo una serie di scontri i Lentiensi si arresero in quello che fu un indubbio, grande successo per le armi romane: i giovani Lentiensi furono arruolati a forza nell'esercito e gli altri si sottomisero a Roma: da questo momento in poi questo popolo scompare dalla storia e l'intera confederazione Alemannica viene indebolita al punto che giocherà un ruolo davvero secondario nei drammi del quinto secolo, mentre erano stati uno dei nemici principali dei Romani durante il quarto.

Il giovane Graziano si ritrovò quindi a risplendere finalmente nella gloria militare che sempre fu la sorgente della legittimità a governare nel mondo romano: la vittoria, pur realizzata in gran parte dai suoi generali, lo smarcava da Merobaude e, agli occhi di un'opinione pubblica irritata con Valente, lo proiettava come credibile alternativa a suo Zio.

Non che Graziano si curasse del tutto di questo: una volta raccolti i suoi si affrettò a ripercorrere i suoi passi e dirigersi – attraverso la moderna Svizzera e Austria – verso l'illirico, le porte di Traiano e la Tracia, dove il destino dei Goti sarebbe stato consegnato alla storia dagli irresistibili eserciti combinati d'oriente e d'occidente. In pochi giorni, a tappe forzate, il suo esercito entrò in Illirico. Per annunciare le sue vittorie e il suo arrivo mandò avanti il già citato generale Richomeres.

Nel frattempo Valente, raccolti tutti i reggimenti del suo comitatus, si affrettò a dirigersi verso Adrianopoli dove si fermò su una forte posizione difensiva, in attesa dell'arrivo del collega occidentale. Siamo arrivati ad una giunzione chiave della nostra storia: Richomeres arrivò infatti ad Adrianopoli con una lettera di Graziano che informava lo zio dei suoi mirabili successi in Germania e del fatto che non era oramai lontano: la lettera, in modo forse un po' irrispettoso, chiedeva con insistenza a Valente di non affrontare il rischio di ingaggiare i Goti da solo.

Qui ci toccherà fare un po' di psicologia da salotto: Valente era sempre stato rispettoso del fratello maggiore Valentiniano, riconoscendogli il rango di Augusto “senior”: avrà avuto dei momenti nei quali desiderare qualcosa di più, ma mentre suo fratello era in vita aveva sempre accettato il suo ruolo. Ora però era arrivato il suo momento: era lui ora l'Augusto senior. Invece doveva sentirsi dettare istruzioni da questo sbarbatello di nipote, ricoperto per giunta di gloria militare. Gloria che gli era sempre sfuggita e alla quale era stato costretto a rinunciare proprio quando era stato pronto alla missione della sua vita in Persia. La sua politica di accoglienza era stata un disastro, il popolo a Costantinopoli l'odiava e per spargere sangue sulle ferite il suo nipotino aveva appena vinto una splendida battaglia in occidente. Essere subordinati al fratello maggiore poteva essere accettabile per Valente, giocare il ruolo di comparsa con suo nipote non lo era di certo.

Non si trattava solo di una questione di prestigio: l'opinione pubblica era contro di lui. Il popolo della capitale aveva appena ricevuto notizia dei successi di Graziano: molti probabilmente stavano sussurrando che forse la soluzione ai problemi degli ultimi due anni era di fronte ai loro occhi: avere un nuovo imperatore. E chi meglio di un giovane brillante, soprattutto se paragonato all'indeciso, sfortunato e debole Valente?

A rafforzare la sua determinazione, Valente ricevette delle informazioni incoraggianti sul fronte militare: Fritigern aveva riunito quanti più dei suoi fosse possibile e marciava contro Adrianopoli. Gli esploratori romani dichiararono che aveva sotto di sé non più di 10 mila uomini mentre Valente aveva portato dall'oriente un esercito ben più consistente. Ahimè non abbiamo le cifre esatte ma considerando la notitia dignitatum, la disposizione degli eserciti e la consistenza del comitatus possiamo dedurre che avesse portato nei Balcani tra i 20 e i 30 mila uomini, probabilmente più vicino alla cifra inferiore delle due. Comunque più che sufficiente per regolare i conti con i Goti di Fritigern senza bisogno dell'ingombrante aiuto dell'insolente nipote.

Valente comunque non voleva fare solo di testa sua e convocò un celeberrimo consiglio di guerra: Sebastiano, imbaldanzito dai suoi recenti successi suggeriva di attaccare immediatamente, altri erano più prudenti, consigliando in tutti i casi di aspettare l'arrivo delle truppe di Graziano.
